Video Game

Freudian Forest: 2D Pixel-based Video Game 2019

My latest large project has been the development of a Freudian video game, centered around Freud’s model of the psyche consisting of the id, ego, and superego.

Imagine being thrown into a physical manifestation of the human psyche. This manifestation solely depends on the main character’s experiences, feelings, and traumas. For this particular character, familiar interior and exterior places are fused with irrational fears. Further distorted by minds fantasy. Here creatures of the unconscious roam aimlessly.

Currently the objective is to find Freud and explore the space. I will be adding more game functions, such as collecting items and fighting enemies soon.

Navigation will consist of using the up, down, left, and right arrows to navigate the space. Click objects with the right mouse button to receive dialog messages. Not all objects that are clicked with render a dialog box. I’m currently in the development stage of creating a object pickup system with conceptual relevance to the meter I have created.

Here is an animation of one of Freud’s idles. He is a boss character that will often reoccur throughout the game.

More On the Concept

In order to develop a video game from Freudian theory I brainstormed ideas into three separate coggles:

  • Freud coggle of thoughts contains a break down of psychological theory
  • Game design coggle contains further separation of how I would breakdown the concepts into c# for game play
  • Game attributes coggle is a separation of attributes, dynamics, aesthetics, mechanics, composite values of how the game will function
